Having worked my way through multiple research methods, I felt comfortable with drawing my initial bulk of knowledge gathering to a close. Via the methods of roleplaying, observation, and gathering user feedback, I was able to determine the needs of Auckland public transport users, as well as valuable insights.
Insights:
- Unlit areas along Dominion Road and its adjacent streets result in a feeling of insecurity.
- Bus stops tend to 'blend in' with the surrounding urban environment, making them hard to see.
- People feel vulnerable waiting at bus stops at night, particularly lone females.
- Timetables are complicated, and next to impossible to read without any provided lighting.
- The sporadic layout of Dominion Roads similar looking restaurants make judging which stop to
get off at difficult.
- People are at ease when walking in groups.
- Bus stops are set back off the road, making it harder for the bus driver to see you.
Needs:
- Adequate lighting, for both security and wayfinding.
- More prominent bus infrastructure to increase awareness and a sense of dependability.
- Suitable, clean shelter with upcoming buses visible.
- Easy to read timetables, working towards a 'turn up and go' level of accessibility.
Opportunity statement:
There is an opportunity to utilise lighting to improve the wayfinding experience for Balmoral public transport users stemming from the difficulty and vulnerability people feel when using the AT services at night time.
