I spoke to the production supervisor of Mulcahy Engineering, a sheet metal fabricators specialising in mass production. I sent him through sketches and CAD files of a leg insert I was trying to construct. He informed me that pressing it out of steel is do-able, but wouldn't provide a tidy surface finish due to the weld distortion when attaching the threaded tube.

He did mention that CNC machining could be an option, but I'm not convinced.....the thread in the middle would require a pretty tricky machine path. I did a rough quote for a die cast insert using an online price calculator, and the price came to a very reasonable $10 per insert. That is in USD, and only a rough cost, but if I can get them done for around that price, it will be very cost effective.
