With the presentation date looming, I began sketching out concepts based around my 3 selected ideas.
I began sketching a design for a retrofittable security light that is easily attachable to the existing bus poles situated at each bus stop. The first of my concepts is a low cost, retrofittable LED lighting system that provides security to bus users at night, while also providing increased visibility for bus drivers, insuring there are no 'drive-bys'. Power is supplied by solar panels that are inherent to the lights design.
My second concept is a further refined version; a retrofittable lamp reminiscent of familiar household lamps provides light security in a more attractive and contemporary package. A pull cord switch adds a novel touch, and draws on the idea of 'urban acupuncture', an idea that improvements in key area within a city can bring widespread benefits. This second concept was well received by my lecturers at the presentations and shall be the concept I further develop. Though focusing on this particular concept, I will no doubt draw on features of my other concepts to improve my final design proposal. I'll also look into adding functionality via smartphone access, but further research will have to be conducted in order to assess the desirability of additional functions.
