In order to ascertain which age group I intended to design for, I researched the varying 'stages' of mental, social and emotional development people go through during their school years. I made the decision to tackle the 6 - 10 age group. I chose this demographic as this is the most common age that children start school in developing nations, according to the World Bank. Beginning education and being involved in social interactions between the ages of 6 and 10 is hugely important as children this age begin to develop an understanding of social intricacies, become aware of the larger world, and develop mentally at an accelerated rate. Stimulation and mental nourishment are critical at this stage, hence why it is a common starting age to enter education.
Key developments aged 6-10:
- Burgeoning independence.
- Grasps the concept of 'future'.
- Understands friendship and teamwork.
- Rapidly developing mental skills.
- Can articulate thoughts and feelings.
- Learns concern for others.
- Develop longer attention spans.
- Physical development (ball skills, tying shoelaces).
To reiterate, I chose this age group as it is a crucial stage in a childs learning, and is where the mental and social development of children can be influenced the most. By providing furniture for educational facilities, funding can be freed up for higher quality teachers and educational equipment, improving the education of this pliable demographic.
