I made the decision to carry on with my initial chair concept. Despite Action Manufacturing's concerns about the waste material that resulted from my concept, I simply couldn't shape an attractive form using such a large amount of the Omnipanel, especially given the very short amount of time remaining in this project coupled with the fact that we cant use the university workshop (Omnipanel blunts tools). This, and the fact that by using such a large amount would render the chair near immovable by a primary school aged child.
I began drawing up shapes on a sheet of Omnipanel using my ergonomic research and concept sketches as a guide. Though not the most efficient use of a panel, I did my best to nest them in a way that reduced both cutting time and material wastage. I shall be able to get four leg sections, or two chairs out of one 810 x 1175mm piece of Omnipanel offcut. This will result in a waste reduction of around 60%.
