Following my interviews with both a school principal and teachers, as well as observation and research, I have decided to work towards the design of a basic table and an individual desk with storage. I am looking at making the basic table, aimed at the younger students, height adjustable. This will allow me to offer one desk to suit different ages / heights. Alternatively, I can offer the same table top with different sized legs.....which would be more cost effective or appealing to customers?
As students get older, they move to individual desks, though still arranged in a group. Storage is important, as they have books and other stationary, as well as personal effects which they want to keep safe. During these early stages, I'm leaning towards a pull out draw instead of a flip up desk lid due to both the convenience of a drawer (no need to hold books on lid as you open it), and the ease of manufacture.....a sliding drawer is easier to sort out than a folding lid with fixed tray. I could even use an existing drawer.......
I begun conducting concept sketches surrounding these two product areas.
