I came up with what I thought was a pretty cunning solution! A steel or alloy threaded adapter that fits into a slot cut into the table top. A threaded wooden leg winds into the adapter, forming a tight connection against the underside of the table. An email to Will asking for his take on the idea raised a few issues. First, the cost. Even at $25 per adapter, a low estimate, that's $100 per table. And he was unsure if it would be strong enough if it just clamped into the foam.......I might try this out in the workshop just to see how it works.
